Quick answer
Actor headshots Denver performers bring to auditions should look exactly like you: honest skin, clear eyes, and expressions that match the roles you go out for. Rocky Mountain Photography shoots theatrical and commercial looks in studio or natural light, keeps retouching minimal, and delivers files sized for casting platforms and your agent.
Casting directors spend seconds on a thumbnail, so actor headshots in Denver have one job: get you called in, then make sure the person who walks into the room matches the picture. That means current hair, honest retouching, and a look that fits the parts you are right for.
Rocky Mountain Photography has photographed people across the Front Range since Jeff and Nick Perry opened the studio in 2016. Actor sessions run differently from corporate headshots - more looks, more expression work, and a lot more conversation about type.
We start with a short call about your casting type, your representation, and the roles you are submitting for. If you have an agent, bring their notes; many agencies have clear preferences on framing and background. From there we plan the number of looks, usually a theatrical and a commercial look at minimum, plus any specialty looks you need.
On the day, we warm up with simple frames while you settle in. Then we work through each look with specific direction on eyes, chin, and energy, shooting enough variation that you have real choices. You review images on a monitor as we go, so we can adjust if something is not reading. Wardrobe changes happen between looks, and we watch for stray hairs, collar issues, and lint so they do not need to be fixed later.

Theatrical headshots are for film, television, and stage dramas. They are usually tighter, quieter, and more intense, with darker or neutral tones and a focus on the eyes. Commercial headshots are brighter and more open, with a genuine smile and approachable energy for ads, print, and corporate video. Lifestyle or character looks suggest a specific type - the coach, the nurse, the young professional - through wardrobe and setting without becoming a costume.
For wardrobe, bring solid colors that flatter your skin tone, a few necklines, and layers that change the feel quickly, such as a denim jacket or a simple blazer. Skip logos, busy patterns, and anything that pulls attention from your face. Get any haircut a week before so it looks settled, not fresh.

Retouching for actors is deliberately light. We remove temporary blemishes and stray hairs and even out color, but we keep scars, freckles, moles, and lines that are part of how you look in person. A headshot that hides those details can cost you trust in the audition room.
Final files are delivered in high resolution for printing 8x10s and in web sizes suitable for casting platforms and personal sites. We can provide both color and black-and-white versions when you need them for stage programs. If your agent wants specific crops or orientations, tell us before the session and we will frame for them. Next-day delivery on many photo shoots means a few selects can be ready quickly when a submission deadline is close.

Tell us how many looks you need, whether you prefer studio light or natural light outdoors, and any deadline you are working toward, such as a showcase, agency meeting, or self-tape season. We will suggest a session length and send a written quote that lists looks, number of retouched images, and delivery formats.
Outdoor natural-light sessions often use open shade along brick buildings downtown or tree cover in city parks, scheduled away from harsh midday sun. Studio sessions are better when you need a very consistent background for an agency roster. Either way, once the plan and quote look right, you can book online, and we will send a prep checklist covering wardrobe, grooming, and what to bring on the day.

Where the typical experience tends to have you waiting for the end, they have made a fun and comfortable environment to allow free expression to get that perfect shot. Your toughest choice is picking between several PERFECT shots, rather than trying to determine the least terrible."

Bring three to five tops in solid colors with different necklines, one or two layering pieces, any glasses you wear in auditions, and basic grooming items like a comb, lip balm, and blotting papers. If you have agency notes or headshots you liked from other actors, bring those as references.
Most actors book two to four looks, typically theatrical, commercial, and one or two character or lifestyle variations. More looks need more time, so the session length is set in your quote based on how many you choose. We would rather shoot fewer looks well than rush through many.
No. Actor headshots must match you in person, so we only remove temporary things like blemishes, stray hairs, and lint, and even out color. Permanent features stay. If a casting director calls you in, the person they meet should look exactly like the photo they picked.
Yes. Color is standard for most film, television, and commercial casting today. Some theatre companies and stage programs still request black-and-white images, so we can deliver converted versions of your selects when you need them. Let us know which formats you need when you book.
If a deadline is coming, tell us when you book. On many photo shoots we can turn around a small set of selects the next day, with the rest of your retouched images following on the schedule in your quote. Rushed final retouching on a large set may need a custom timeline.
