Quick answer
Denver senior portrait photographers plan outdoor and studio sessions that reflect who a graduate is right now - sports, music, style, friends - while also covering yearbook and announcement needs. Rocky Mountain Photography helps seniors pick locations, outfits, and timing around Denver, then delivers edited images sized for print, school submissions, and social sharing.
Senior year moves fast, and the pictures from it get looked at for decades. As Denver senior portrait photographers, we try to capture the version of a student their family will want to remember: the one in the varsity jacket, the one with the guitar, the one who lives in thrifted denim.
Since 2016, when brothers Jeff and Nick Perry started Rocky Mountain Photography in Denver, we have photographed people at every stage of life. Senior sessions get their own plan because they blend personal style, school requirements, and graduation timing.
Good senior sessions start with the student, not the parent's checklist. Before the date, we ask the senior what they want to remember about this year and what they would actually post. That conversation shapes the location, props, and pace. Some students want a calm, classic set for grandparents; others want urban, high-energy frames.
Timing matters. Many families book late summer or early fall, when the light is soft and leaves are turning in the foothills, which leaves time for yearbook deadlines. Spring sessions work well for cap and gown images close to graduation. Plan for two to four outfits: one dressy, one everyday, and one that shows an interest, like a team uniform, dance costume, or work apron. Bring the gear that matters - a ball, an instrument, a camera, a horse if you can arrange it.

Location sets the tone. For a city feel, we like the brick alleys and bridges around LoDo, Union Station, Larimer Square, and the large murals in RiNo. For green space, Washington Park, City Park with the skyline behind it, and the paths along Cherry Creek give variety within a short walk. For a mountain backdrop, the red rocks around Morrison and the open space trails near Golden are close enough for an evening session.
We pick spots that allow several distinct looks without long drives, since outfit changes take time. Some venues, including certain gardens and private properties, require photography permits or permission, and we sort that out before the session. Evening golden hour is the default for outdoor work because Denver's high-altitude sun is harsh by midday and makes everyone squint.

Many schools have specific yearbook rules: a certain crop, a plain background, a required file size, or a deadline that lands earlier than families expect. Check your school's guidelines and send them to us before the session. We will capture a compliant frame alongside the creative images so you are not scrambling later.
Cap and gown portraits are usually shot closer to graduation, either at the end of a fall session or as a short spring add-on once gowns arrive. Graduation announcement cards look best with a horizontal and a vertical option, so we frame both. If the senior wants photos on campus, ask the school about access rules first, as many restrict photography on school grounds during the school day. Final galleries include high-resolution files for printing plus web sizes for sharing with friends and family.

"I thought my previous head shot was pretty good until I saw what Jeff did! Jeff and I talked about what I wanted my photo to "say" prior to the shoot and he was able to capture it perfectly. Because of his great sense of humor and relatable personality, I went from anxious and uncomfortable to having a blast in a matter of minutes during the photo session. I have and will continue to recommend Jeff and Rocky Mountain Photography."

Rocky Mountain Photography has taken the most basic, boring, and bland niche of still photography and revamped it into a thrilling adventure. Where the typical experience tends to have you waiting for the end, they have made a fun and comfortable environment to allow free expression to get that perfect shot. Your toughest choice is picking between several PERFECT shots, rather than trying to determine the least terrible.

For fall sessions, reach out in late spring or early summer, since September and October evenings fill quickly. If your school has an early yearbook deadline, plan around that date first. Spring cap and gown sessions should be booked a few weeks before graduation season gets busy.
Most seniors choose two to four outfits, depending on session length. Each change takes a few minutes, so more outfits mean fewer locations or a longer session. We recommend a mix: something dressy, something casual, and one outfit tied to a sport, hobby, or interest.
We can. Some families add cap and gown frames to the end of a fall session if the gown is available, while others book a short spring session once gowns arrive. Either way, we capture vertical and horizontal frames so announcement designs have options.
Yes, many seniors like a few frames with best friends, teammates, or siblings. We usually save that for the end so the main session stays focused. Let us know how many people will join so we can plan time and pick a location with room for a group.
Send us your school's yearbook guidelines before the session. Requirements often specify crop, background, file type, dimensions, and a submission deadline. We shoot a compliant image during the session and deliver it in the requested format so it can be uploaded without edits.
Parents are welcome, and they often help with outfit changes and props. Some seniors relax more with fewer people watching, so we may suggest parents step back for parts of the session. The goal is genuine expressions, and the student's comfort comes first.
