Drone civil twilight photography captures a property in the most flattering light of the day. Civil twilight is the period right after sunset, and right before sunrise, when the sun is just below the horizon and the sky turns a deep, even blue. Interior and landscape lights glow warm against it, and from the air, a home, hotel, or office building seems to light up from within.
Rocky Mountain Photography, founded in Denver in 2016 by brothers Jeff and Nick Perry, schedules twilight aerials for listing agents, commercial owners, hotels, restaurants, and builders. Our pilots are Part 107-certified and insured. Under Part 107, flights during civil twilight require anti-collision lighting visible for several miles, and our aircraft are equipped for it. We plan every flight around that short window.
What civil twilight is and why it matters
Civil twilight begins at sunset and ends when the sun is about six degrees below the horizon, giving a short period of usable light that varies by date. During that time, the sky holds enough brightness to show detail in the property and landscape, while artificial lights start to dominate. Earlier, the scene looks like a normal daytime photo. Later, the sky goes black and detail falls away. That is why timing is everything. FAA rules allow Part 107 pilots to fly during civil twilight with proper anti-collision lighting, and night operations have their own requirements. We confirm the exact twilight times the day before, arrive early, and fly the key angles first. Some shoots use the morning civil twilight before sunrise instead, which can be calmer and quieter.
Preparing a property for twilight drone photos
Twilight shoots depend on lights, so preparation makes a big difference. Turn on every interior light, including lamps, under-cabinet lights, and closets visible through windows. Open blinds and curtains so warm light spills out. Turn on landscape lighting, pool and spa lights, fire features, and exterior sconces. Remove cars from the driveway and tidy the yard, since aerials show everything. For commercial properties, ask management to keep lobby, signage, and parking lot lights on, and coordinate with tenants if possible. We usually photograph the exterior from the ground during daylight first, then launch the drone as the sky deepens, capturing several heights and angles. Editing balances the blue sky with warm interior light, and we avoid fake effects such as added fire or invented lights.
Who uses twilight drone photography
Listing agents use a twilight aerial as the hero image to stop scrolling buyers, especially for luxury homes, mountain properties, and homes with pools or views. Our residential team also offers twilight exterior photos and video for listings. Hotels, resorts, and restaurants use twilight aerials for booking pages and campaigns, since lit patios and pools look inviting. Commercial owners and architects use them to highlight lighting design and glass facades. Builders show model homes and amenities at their most appealing. Twilight also pairs well with sunset photos and video captured minutes earlier from the same flight, giving you two distinct looks in one session.
